Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor Trailer Released

The Doctors' greatest adventure lands in two weeks- check out the first trailer for the 50th Anniversary Special!
The BBC have today released the first trailer for their upcoming Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special, The Day of the Doctor. Picking up after the events of May's The Name of the Doctor, the feature-length celebratory episode spans present-day London, Elizabethan England and a devastating battle somewhere in the depths of space.

Suffice to say that this trail (below) has been long awaited by fans, especially as it's the video that aired at ComicCon in San Diego to an exclusive audience, much to the ire of UK followers. The video should speak for itself, but I will at least tease you with the details that the Eleventh Doctor, the Tenth Doctor, Hurt's Doctor, Clara, Rose, Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, Queen Elizabeth I, the Zygons and the Daleks all appear in this stunning initial preview!

Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor broadcasts on BBC One and in cinemas worldwide on Saturday November 23rd at 7.50pm.

Gravity Review

Alfonso Cuaron's space odyssey is a visionary breakthrough for 3D, cinematography and modern storytelling- our release day verdict.
Space- the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission...apologies, I'm recalling the wrong film.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far...sorry, wrong film again. Funny, how easy it can be to get such matters mixed up these days, eh?

With Gravity, Alfonso Cuaron enters a genre of cinema which has become all but determined by the clichés and tropes that litter its past greats. In 2013, to some film-makers the likelihood of succumbing to these preconceptions of motion pictures which venture beyond our planet's spherical confines could seem all but inevitable, a challenge so futile that it barely warrants consideration. For Cuaron, though, the challenge is a mere stepping stone, a foundation on which he can and does build a consistently groundbreaking visual and narrative masterpiece.

The latter component in particular is a notably difficult element for any creator of a blockbuster to tackle at this stage of the industry's development. Indeed, arguably as a result of the familiarity the audience has with its genre and the industry's greatest offerings in general, this piece's central plot twists are neither unique nor unprecedented. How Cuaron sidesteps any potential dissatisfaction that this underlying layer of deja vu might provoke is by structuring the flick in such a manner that greatly defies our expectations of narrative momentum and progression, an initial dramatically shattering moment at the conclusion of its first act leading into one of the most compelling, subversive viewing experiences that the box office has offered up this year.

Devoid of an accomplished lead star, the intensely captivating storyline would be done a great disservice in not attaining its full potential. Sandra Bullock has already more than proved her mettle in productions such as The Blind Side, though, and she enters her most triumphant performance yet here. Though we mustn't neglect George Clooney's equally noteworthy portrayal as Matt Kowalski, for Clooney shines so boldly as to threaten to steal the limelight in each of his appearances, and there may be one or two instances where we question the human accuracy of her inconsistent sparks of confidence, Bullock's Rayana Stone is the film's key focus and she's as intricately crafted a construct (thanks to Cuaron's spellbinding screenplay and Bullock's contribution) as any of the genre's great icons.

As rare as it is in 2013, Gravity's exemplary implementation of 3D technology is one of its finest strengths by far. Interwoven with Cuaron's visually splendid cinematography, it bestows the cinema auditorium with a near-tangible, pseudo-physical extra dimension, the likes of which hasn't been glimpsed fully since 2009's Avatar. Whether it's in the broader setpieces of the production involving oncoming debris colliding with and wrecking the satellite stations between which Stone traverses, or in the more involved, individual instances of Stone exploring the hollow, silent innards of those same space stations, the realisation of the extremely involved relationship between the viewer, the camera and the on-screen events of the piece is spectacular.

That aforementioned relationship formed and developed over the course of the film's conservative 90 minute running time is the intrinsic factor of its success. Not since Les Miserables launched in January has a motion picture been so relentlessly dedicated to ensuring that its viewer never finds himself or herself detached from the emotionally charged storyline, never leaving them to flail and dangle helplessly as Stone does in a void of sub-par characterisations or overexaggerated blockbuster setpieces. Few films can claim even in scenes of pure silence to match the astounding compulsion that Cuaron strikes for his audience, and this reviewer would speculate that few motion pictures in the near future will do so again.

For this is the true beauty of Gravity, beyond its aesthetic finesse, the likes of which alone has scarcely been matched in the history of cinema- its scribe, its director and its leads take the foundations of the clichés and tropes which have so long defined this genre, utilises their finest implications to their fullest potential and then turns their lamented restrictions of space preconceptions on their head. Far from searching the frosty, soundless depths of space for a 'new' meaning of genre narrative, Cuaron 'simply' takes what we thought we knew of human experience, human futility outside of our world and ultimately human endurance, and with these elements he tells a story in the most fascinating and innovative way, to the extent that Gravity can't fail to be considered as one of 2013's greatest films by a phenomenal margin.

Star Wars: Episode VII Release Date Announced

Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm reveal the date on which we'll return to a galaxy far, far away!
Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm have today announced the release date for their upcoming science-fiction film Star Wars: Episode VII. Set after the events of 1983's Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, the much-anticipated sequel is helmed by J.J. Abrams and is said to revolve around a new band of up-and-coming galactic heroes in the midst of a vast interplanetary conflict.

With this confirmation of a matter of intense recent secrecy, we're finally able to put a few more things into place regarding the monumentally busy period that is 2015. The first quarter of the year will see the release of Frankenstein, The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie 2 (yes, really!), The Fantastic Four and The Penguins of Madagascar, while the Summer of Film will feature the launches of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Assassin's Creed, Jurassic World, Ted 2, Inside Out, Terminator, Minions, Superman Vs. Batman and Ant-Man, with the final two months of 2015 bringing us Bond 24, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, The Good Dinosaur, Kung Fu Panda 3 and of course Abrams' risky seventh instalment in itself. Make no mistake, some of those motion pictures will probably get trampled in the carnage, but perhaps that's what necessary in order to enable the industry to lessen its reliance on classic franchises and look forward to innovation. Who knows?

Star Wars: Episode VII is set for release in cinemas worldwide on December 18th, 2015.

New RoboCop Theatrical Trailer Released

Columbia Pictures bring us gritty, futuristic action aplenty in their new production next Spring.
Columbia Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer have today released the second full theatrical trailer (below) for their upcoming action film RoboCop. A remake of the titular 1987 classic, the film stars Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton and Samuel L. Jackson, with newcomer Joel Kinnaman taking on its lead role.

On first impressions, RoboCop has the potential to at least shine in the box office. This isn't a flick which will likely bother any Film of the Year 2014 awards shortlists, but it should entice the fans of the original and perhaps even introduce a whole new generation of viewers into the series' beloved mythology. Releasing in the early months of the year should in addition enable it to avoid the major Spring and Summer blockbusters, which in turn will allow us to determine fully whether the franchise has any real right to return...

RoboCop blasts into cinemas worldwide on February 12th, 2014.

Five New Marvel TV Shows Announced

Disney and Netflix announce an incredible new multi-year television project deal...
Walt Disney Pictures, Marvel Studios and Netflix have today announced the development of five new television shows based on hit comic-book properties. The news comes in the wake of ABC's ambitious initial Marvel Cinematic Universe TV project Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, the first season of which is currently airing on Channel 4 in the UK every Friday.

Just what will this multi-year deal entail, then? For starters, a Daredevil TV show will be developed to released on Netflix in 2015, spanning at least thirteen episodes. After that the situation will only become more frantic, with adaptations of the Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage franchises then scheduled to be released in thirteen-episode seasons in the months following Daredevil's première. And after that? In a move set to rival even the MCU itself, each of the four superhero characters will team up in The Defenders, a mini-series which is hoped to be a televisual equivalent to the Avengers ensemble motion pictures. Whether this deal puts Agents of SHIELD's future into question is a point of debate right now, but for Marvel fans it's nevertheless an extremely exciting time to follow the studio's on-screen adaptations.

It's safe to say that such an onslaught of news, announcements and the like is somewhat unprecedented for a traditionally secretive network such as this, a fact which only serves to make the astounding array of reveals all the more satisfying.

For obvious reasons, we shan't dilly or dally any longer, for fear of wasting time. Here, then, is our definitive round-up of all of the key news reveals on Doctor Who's biggest month ever that have hit today:

LEGO Marvel Superheroes: Maximum Overload Debuts

Want more LEGO Marvel action before the game's release? TT Games have you covered...
TT Games and Marvel Studios have today released a series of fictitious videos based on their LEGO Marvel Superheroes video game universe. The five-part run, titled Maximum Overload, sees the Avengers and Spider-Man facing off a variety of their oldest foes, as the treacherous Loki sets in motion a dastardly plot to take control of the planet Earth.

This writer has to admit unreservedly that there's a great deal of credible effort that's clearly gone into the production. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, perhaps, but there seems to have been a notable risk taken in bringing these shorts to YouTube free of charge rather than initiating a £5 DVD release as has been the norm with recent LEGO Star Wars shorts. With any luck, this move is a sign to come. Regardless, each of the five videos (below) are worth your time, and the first episode of the series is attached to this post.

LEGO Marvel Superheroes assembles on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo WiiU, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS and PC on November 15th.
