Constantine First Season Commissioned

The DC Universe takes a turn for the magical as we're introduced to John Constantine!
NBC have today announced the commissioning of a full season of their fantasy drama Constantine. Set (to our knowledge, at least) in an alternate narrative universe to those established in Man of Steel and Arrow (no news yet on whether those two will collide anytime soon either, sadly), the programme will centre on an expert exorcist who finds himself slowly but surely engulfed into a religious conflict which could determine the fate of the planet Earth.

Believe it or not, this isn't the first time that a major studio has attempted to bring DC's Hellblazer comic-strip to our screens- a cinematic adaptation was released in 2005 and starred none other than Keanu "Neo" Reeves, though it evidently didn't meet with quite the reception required to spawn a budding superhero film franchise these days. Enter Matt Ryan, who'll take on the mantle of Constantine in what's virtually guaranteed to be a far more grounded (and thus ideally empathetic) rendition of the character than Reeves' and, to some extent, the original comic-book incarnation. Stay tuned to On-Screen for more details on the series' plot, characters and wider DCU connections in the months ahead.

Constantine will depart purgatory to make its début on NBC this Autumn.
