HitFix have this week announced the identity of a new guest star set to appear in an upcoming instalment of The CW's hit superhero drama The Flash. Based in the same narrative universe as Arrow, this increasingly acclaimed spin-off depicts the origins of the eponymous Justice League member, the exploits of whom are instrumental in the redemption of Central City after a freak scientific accident infects many of its citizens with potentially catastrophic super-powers.
Among them, according to Hitfix, will be "an anarchist terrorist con man [try saying all of that after this Friday's inevitable onslaught of post-work festive drinks] serving a life sentence in Iron Heights [the prison in which plenty of antagonists from Arrow and its aforementioned sister show alike are contained] who helps Barry (Grant Gustin) and Det. West (Jesse L. Martin) to foil the city-wide attacks of a wannabe Trickster eagerly following in the original's deadly footsteps." The con man's name? Why, the Trickster, of course, and as if the notion of an ex-villain pairing up with the world's fastest superhero (barring Quicksilver, of course, but DC tend not to discuss him for obvious reasons) to stop one of the former's band of followers from wreaking unprecedented havoc wasn't already captivating enough, the man portraying him (or should we say reprising the role, since he starred as precisely the same character on the John Wesley Shipp show of the same name which aired in the 1990s) in Season One's seventeenth episode is none other than Star Wars' Mark Hamill. This extremely welcome development is the latest in a long line of casting revelations which confirm that - unlike Arrow, to some extent - the programme's début run truly is going from strength to strength and on the basis of the stellar opening nine episodes, at this point we're not exactly inclined to oppose that hypothesis either. Stay tuned to On-Screen in the next few days to discover more regarding what's in store for Gustin's incarnation of the titular comic-book veteran as his first live-action drama races towards the end of its freshman run...
The Flash will return to The CW with its mid-season première, "Revenge of the Rogues", on January 20th, 2015 and to Sky1 with the first instalment of its long-awaited two-part Arrow crossover, "Flash vs. Arrow" today (Tuesday, December 16th) at 8pm.
