Doctor Who: Was Series 6 Better Than Series 5?

This year's run of Doctor Who has been a sensational one, laden with exciting and innovative stories that dared to be different. The question is, did it match or top the 2010 series, or fail to reach its lofty heights? Using my revised scores from my rewatch of Series Five and Six, it's time to find out...
SERIES FIVE
THE ELEVENTH HOUR: 9/10
THE BEAST BELOW: 6/10
VICTORY OF THE DALEKS: 8/10
THE TIME OF ANGELS: 9/10
FLESH AND STONE: 10/10
THE VAMPIRES OF VENICE: 9/10
AMY'S CHOICE: 7/10
THE HUNGRY EARTH: 7/10
COLD BLOOD: 4/10
VINCENT AND THE DOCTOR: 9/10
THE LODGER: 9/10
THE PANDORICA OPENS: 10/10
SERIES FIVE AVERAGE: 8.1/10
SERIES SIX
THE IMPOSSIBLE ASTRONAUT: 9/10
DAY OF THE MOON: 10/10
THE CURSE OF THE BLACK SPOT: 8/10
THE DOCTOR'S WIFE: 9/10
THE REBEL FLESH: 8/10
THE ALMOST PEOPLE: 4/10
A GOOD MAN GOES TO WAR: 10/10
LET'S KILL HITLER: 10/10
NIGHT TERRORS: 8/10
THE GIRL WHO WAITED: 10/10
THE GOD COMPLEX: 9/10
CLOSING TIME: 8/10
THE WEDDING OF RIVER SONG: 9/10
SERIES SIX AVERAGE: 8.6/10
So, in my opinion this year's season fared better, especially in the second half of the run. Series Five was more of an experimental phase for the Moff/Smith era, reaching for the stars in its best efforts but turning out average or mediocre at its worst. This time around, bar The Almost People there weren't any average episodes, an impressive feat that the team will have to strive to continue in 2012. I do think there are still improvements to be made, though...

  • We could do with more individual stories next season- this ambitious story arc has been great, but many of the endings to the episodes leading up to the mid-season finale felt tacked on, and it was hard to get a satisfying pay-off in The Wedding, so unless the Moff and co can integrate an arc throughout the entire thirteen episode saga, I think we should move back to what Series One-Two did.
  • What's happening with the canon of the show and its spin-offs? If Captain Jack Harkness returns to the show next season, the whereabouts of the Doctor during the events of the Miracle and Amy/Rory not mentioning it will need to be explained. I understand Who and Torchwood now appear to follow different timelines (bar the odd fleeting reference to one another), but could we not get some clarification on why the shows don't link up?
