Where The Doctor's Wife sent this show's titular Time Lord on an emotional journey as the laws of time and space were bent, The Girl Who Waited looks to do the same for Mrs Amelia Pond this week. Opening in an alien quarantine facility designed to cure a contagious disease which will kill anyone with two hearts in just a day (now who do we know who fits that bill?), the timey-wimey instalment finds Amy trapped in a faster time-stream. So what lies ahead? Let's find out...
DOCTOR-LITE: Matt Smith went off during the filming of this episode to shoot Closing Time, the James Corden sequel Episode 12, so the Doctor's role is somewhat limited in The Girl Who Waited. As it is, he's inflicted with the disease that will kill him within twenty four hours- the universe can't seem to get enough of putting the Time Lord in mortal danger these days- and must rest in the TARDIS to be cured. His presence will still be felt, however: through two special pairs of glasses (one donned by himself, the other by Rory), the Doctor can catch all of the action as he strives to break his police box between the timelines before it's too late...
AMY-HEAVY:...but too late for what? Amy takes centre-stage this week, meeting an older version of herself, and subsequently chased by the kind Handbots, who want to administer a medicine which will cure her of the contagious disease. There's just one problem- she's not infected, and the medicine is deadly to humans! Writer Tom McRae and showrunner Steven Moffat have said this one will be very important for the character arcs of both Amy and Rory, so watch out for major developments!
THE ARCS OF TIME: So, the Doctor finds himself in deathly danger once again- for the second time in just three episodes, and doesn't that seem a bit of a coincidence...? Of course, the final death of our favourite Time Lord is coming very soon, as the 22nd of April 2011 approaches. Hopefully we'll get more references to where this season's ambitious arc is going, perhaps with a key bit of dialogue or two...
Doctor Who: The Girl Who Waited airs this Saturday at 7.15pm on BBC One.
