Berkshire Book Award 2011 Shortlist Announced

The Berkshire Book Award has always been a great local event to follow, and to represent the preferences of teenage readers in its shortlist. Here's this year's selection- announced today, I'd say it's going to cater more to girls than it will boys, but there may yet be some hidden gems in there...
ARTICHOKE HEARTS (Sita Brahmachari)- Twelve year old Mira comes from a chaotic, artistic and outspoken family where it's not always easy to be heard. She is drawn to mysterious boy Jide, but as she experiences grief for the first time, she also discovers the wonderful, often mystical world that surrounds her.
VELVET (Mary Hooper)- A laundress in a Victorian steam laundry, Velvet is asked to come and work for Madame Savoya. But soon Velvet realises Savoya is not who she seems, and her life is in danger...
DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: THE UGLY TRUTH (Jeff Keaney)- Greg Heffley has always been in a hurry to grow up, but is getting older all it's really cracked up to be? After a fight with his best friend Rowley, it looks like Greg is going to have to discover the ugly truth all by himself!
MY SISTER LIVES ON THE MANTELPIECE (Annabel Pitcher)- A emotional story of heartbreak and uplifting courage- can a family suffering after a terrorist attack truly recover from the past?
LILY ALONE (Jacqueline Wilson)- Lily isn't home along, but with three younger siblings to look after, she sure wishes she was! Whilst her parents are on holiday, Lily decides to let the kids go on a camping adventure- surely no one will work out they're there...?
BLOOD RED ROAD (Moira Young)- Every step of Saba's journey sizzles with danger- in a lawless world, Saba must race to find her kidnapped twin brother before it's too late!
The Berkshire Book Award voting system now can open, and the winner will be announced in March 2012.
