Opinion: Five Films You Won't See Coming In 2013

Is your New Year's Resolution to see more underappreciated movies this year? Then look no further than this personal guide to the best unknowns of 2013...
Make no mistake, the land of box office entertainment is a busy old place these days. As if it weren't tough enough to select the biggest and best blockbusters of each respective year to spend your hard-earned cash, it's becoming just as important nowadays that you seek out the more under-promoted of each month's film roster to check out the new instalments of cinema which could well make the Academy Awards' Best Picture shortlist the next January.

The biggest problem in this respect? UK movie advertising. Time and time again, I've seen duff action blockbusters like Battleship favoured considerably in cinema trailer reels over up-and-coming instalments of greatness like Hugo and Argo, and it's an irksome precedent that's unlikely to halt anytime soon. With that in mind, then, below I've compiled a list of five films set for release in 2013 that will likely rock the worlds of cinema-goers if they take the time to find a venue screening them and gather a host of open-minded companions to see them. See what you think, and get ready to watch the magic happen...
DJANGO UNCHAINED- Quinten Tarantino is the man who brought us Inglorious Bastards, and now he's bouncing back with another historical great, Django Unchained. Christopher Waltz returns from the Nazi-bating film too, and he brings with him new talent in the form of Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel Jackson, both film legends who could well help ensure that this becomes a bonafida Film Of The Year contender. (January 18th)
OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL- Recent film adaptations of the classic The Wizard Of Oz haven't quite done the original justice, but this version of the saga looks to provide an interesting change of direction for lore. Taking place in a prequel universe akin to the West End hit Wicked, Oz: The Great And Powerful features James Franco and Mila Kunis as its headliners, and like Wreck-It-Ralph a month before it is a Disney film that doesn't deserve to be missed. (March 8th)
THE GREAT GATSBY- Another DiCaprio winner, in case you haven't heard, The Great Gatsby is a new take on F Scott Fitzgerald's classic 1923 Jazz Age novel. With Titanic's award-winner, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire and Isla Fisher heading up the all-star cast, there's true Oscar potential here, and with Jay-Z aiding with the score, expect a very different version of Gatsby this time around. (May 25th)
THIS IS THE END- You'll undoubtedly hear of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost's new apocalyptic comedy film The World's End in the months leading up to its June release, yet This Is The End looks like another great movie of the same ike that may fall under the radar. It packs stars including James Franco, Emma Watson and Seth Rogen playing themselves, so don't underestimate it! (June 16th)
JACK RYAN- If you haven't heard of the character, Jack Ryan is a Tom Clancy creation who's been brought back to life on the big screen four times. Now, we've got Ben Affleck in the lead role along with Keira Knightley and Harrison Ford and a host of other stars. There's a good chance that this will turn out to be a surprise hit. (Boxing Day)
