First Captain America 2 Details Teased

The sequel to The First Avenger has a new tone and narrative!
ComicCon 2012 saw the announcement that Captain America: The Winter Soldier would be the sequel to last year's hit superhero film The First Avenger, a reveal met with rapturous applause from fans everywhere given the high esteem of the Bucky Barnes resurrection storyline. The follow-up's co director Anthony Russio has begun speaking to Bleeding Cool about just what we can expect from The Winter Soldier, and I've rounded up his first thoughts and comments below...

  • ON THE WINTER SOLDIER AS A DIRECT ADAPTATION: "In a way. I mean, they're all sort of rooted in what's come before, but they're all also their own jumping-off points."
  • ON WHAT THE APPEAL OF THE STORYLINE WAS: "Well, we like the story. I can't talk too much about specifics, that's the way Marvel handles things. I can say there's a darker, edgier sensibility at work there that we found appealing, and that it's going to find its way to Captain America in the modern day."
  • ON THE LIKELIHOOD OF FLASHBACKS TO WW2: "Certainly Cap has this complicated history. We're making the movie for first-time viewers, not just for fans, so because Cap does have this complicated history- he was this skinny guy who became a Super Soldier, he was born back then and he's living here now- in the storytelling, you need to convey that to an audience who doesn't know Cap's story."
So what with the relatively standalone nature of the film teased by Russio, can we expect the sequel not to have many references to Avengers or its sequel, or is this just cover up of another post-credits preview? We've got a while to wait, but the speculation will no doubt begin now! Captain America: The Winter Soldier ricochets into theatres on April 4th, 2014.
