Advent Calendar Day Four: Tron Retrospective (4/5)
28 years on, the original Tron film could be forgiven for losing its impact: though I wasn't there for its debut in 1982, sci-fi fans everywhere sing praises of Disney's classic movie using then state-of-the-art technology to parallel the worlds of computer programs and human life, with the former beginning to threaten the sanctity of the latter, refusing to accept its creators. This is an intriguing premise for such an early example of science-fiction in film that actually worked, so it's no wonder that at times the production team failed to keep their expectations in line, focusing too much on frantic vehicle battles to show off the still-impressive animation and often providing such cardboard cut-out characters like RAM and Tron that viewers might find themselves getting confused as to who's who. Never mind that, though: Tron must have been a huge benchmark for blockbusters in its time, and still to this day with its whimsical colours and tale of rebelling against the 'established norm' that makes it a fine fit for the Christmas movie-line-up on Sky. Does the magic live on in its anticipated sequel, Tron: Legacy, due out December 17th? Find out on the weekend of release here!
