Fable III Review (8.5/10)
A confession from me: there have been so many other video games out recently that I hadn't gotten around to playing and reviewing Fable III. Another confession: I'm glad I didn't just give it a miss! Fable III continues 50 years on from the events of Fable II, where a Hero overthrew a violent dictator to become King, with a hugely different plot of...overthrowing a dictator to become King. Don't worry if this sounds more than a little suspicious- lots has changed since the 2008 Xbox 360 sequel. For starters, decisions play an even bigger part in proceedings, as you make promises to groups led by characters with voice actors from across British entertainment (Simon Pegg, Stephen Fry and Jonathan Ross are just some examples of the high standard on offer here) and then either carry out on them or discard the promise as you become King and must make key choices for the long-term safety of the Kingdom. As always, the graphics aren't the best on 360, and occasionally the combat gets a bit repetitive, but these are becoming trademark flaws of the series as a whole; what really stops Fable III from attaining Game of the Year nomination is the way that it can end. Considering that most RPG (role-play game) titles end with minor deviations on a set climax, the fact that your kingdom can essentially be left in ruin should you not invest at least 20 hours of your spare time on side-quests and tedious jobs is pretty disheartening to say the least, especially given that a lot of people who would call themselves 'good gamers' will face this outcome. By all means give Fable III a try if you want a mostly impressive plot that could easily be a contender for Best Game Plot of the Year, but be aware that to get the ending most people want will require a lot of play-time on your part!
