Warner Bros. Pictures have this week announced the global release date of their upcoming live-action fantasy film Jungle Book: Origins. Based (as if you hadn't already guessed) on Rupyard Kipling's universally beloved 19th Century short story collection The Jungle Book, Origins' screenplay will be written by Steve Kloves (whose previous work includes contributions to the Harry Potter franchise) and directed by none other than The Lord of the Rings and Planet of the Apes' Andy Serkis.
In any other decade, these attributes alone would have virtually guaranteed Warner a considerable amount of box office success. Perhaps that'll still be the case come 2016, yet the fact that Walt Disney Pictures are launching their own live-action reboot of The Jungle Book - starring Idris Elba, Ben Kingsley and now Bill Murray (in the role of Baloo, no less!) just a year before Origins certainly won't help matters. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Tarzan, King Arthur, LEGO Ninjago and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them should all soften the blow for the studio in the event of a misfire, but it'd come as no great shock to us if we catch wind of a production delay or cancellation talks for the project in the not too distant future. For now, though, let's wish Serkis and company the very best of luck in bringing Origins to our screens - lesser production teams have doubtless tried and succeeded before with the odds stacked firmly against them!
Jungle Book: Origins crawls into cinemas worldwide on October 21st, 2016.
