Focus Features have released the teaser trailer for their upcoming drama film The Theory of Everything. Starring Les Miserables' Eddie Redmayne, Cemetery Junction's Felicity Jones and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Askaban's David Thewlis, this increasingly potent motion picture investigates the life and ongoing struggle of renowned physicist Steven Hawkins and the devastating effect that his sudden physical accident had on his peers and loved ones.
Redmayne in particular went some way to proving his credentials as a budding thespian with his accomplished portrayal of freedom fighter Marius in Tom Hooper's aforementioned adaptation of the beloved West End musical last year, but a role such as this requires a great deal of conviction and self-assurance in order for an actor to fully capitalize on it; with this in mind, witnessing Redmayne's attempts to capture the essence of Hawkins as an individual thinker and achiever should prove to be nothing short of a fascinating cinematic experience. Certainly, this initial preview shouldn't leave viewers particularly concerned regarding the Birdsong star's capacity to fulfil the unspoken criteria of his latest role, but (aptly enough in the case of the piece's subject) only time will tell whether Theory can truly do its 'source material' (for want of a term that doesn't risk blandly categorising Hawkins or his triumph over adversity) justice.
The Theory of Everything will present its hypotheses on life, the universe and everything in UK cinemas nationwide on January 2nd, 2015.
