Lead star, director and screenwriter Ricky Gervais has this week announced further details on his latest cinematic project. Dubbed Life on the Road, the film - which, to some extent, serves as a direct continuation of the narrative of Gervais' hit TV sitcom The Office - follows David Brent as he struggles to find success within the now-global music industry and resultantly departs the UK in the hope of leaving his mark (no doubt in more ways than one!) elsewhere.
In light of the fact that Gervais has only just begun drafting the screenplay for Life, that he's unable to reveal much more than this perhaps shouldn't come as too much of a shock to fans. All the same, we've compiled what he did reveal on This Morning recently for those interested in such things: "So, it's ten years after The Office and [David] is currently going up and down the UK selling cleaning products, but he's never let go of that dream of being a popstar! He thinks he can still make it [...] and thinks he might get signed if he goes on tour, so the film will be about that. [...] I'm writing it now, and we film it next year." The prospect of witnessing Brent's increasingly futile attempts to make it big as an aspiring pop icon is enticing if nothing else, but until we're able to pass judgement on the first official promotional images for Life or its teaser trailer (which we'd imagine will land in the late stages of 2015), our verdict on the overall project's potency will have to remain as much of a secret as its still-to-be-revealed cast-list and the surprise cameos that are sure to be kept under wraps (well, in theory) until its UK première.
Life on the Road is (according to Gervais, at least) planned to take centre-stage in UK cinemas nationwide in 2016.
