Fox Searchlight Pictures have released the teaser trailer (below) for their upcoming comedy-drama film The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. In case the title wasn't overt enough, this India-set motion picture acts as a follow-up to the remarkably accomplished 2012 film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and once again stars the likes of Maggie Smith, Celia Imrie, Judi Dench, Bill Nighy and Penelope Wilton alongside newcomers such as Richard Gere.
Not since the teaser trail for The Hangover: Part II hit the web a few years back have we seen a promotional preview which so unashamedly reveals the similarities its subject bears to its predecessor, although given that the original Best Exotic was nothing short of a hidden gem (we awarded it a stellar 5* score back in 2012), that mightn't necessarily work to the finished product's detriment. Largely stereotypical cultural tropes seem to be just as much of a point of focus here as they were first time around, which inevitably places Second Best Exotic in the much-vaunted (and oft-inaccurate, though here it rings true) category of "if you liked this, you'll love this", for better or for worse. Ultimately, it's up to readers to decide whether they can get behind a production which doesn't attempt to hide the lack of innovation present in its narrative, but what with the original outing having topped both the UK and US box offices upon its release, we doubt that the production team are particularly concerned about their latest project's financial prospects at the moment.
The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel rides on horseback into UK cinemas nationwide on February 17th, 2015.
