Marvel's big-screen outings go galactic in a new science-fiction epic next Summer!
Walt Disney Pictures and Marvel Studios have today released an updated plot synopsis for their 2014 superhero film Guardians of the Galaxy. The third chapter in Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase Two stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel and Karen Gillan.

More than ever before, Guardians will take fans out of their Earth-bound comfort zones, venturing beyond the confines of Sol 3 and the inherently human realm of Asgard into extraterrestrial territory. As depicted in the newly released promotional image (above), CGI-animated talking raccoons and vegetative life-forms feature within the piece's eclectic team ensemble, but connections to the Avengers franchise will emerge through narrative elements such as the Infinity Gems and the secondary villain of Thanos the Destroyer (first glimpsed in 2012's Avengers Assemble).

Here's the full official synopsis for the standalone adventure: "Brash adventurer Peter Quill (Pratt) finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan (Lee Pace), a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits- Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon (Cooper), Groot, a tree-like humanoid (Diesel), the deadly and enigmatic Gamora (Saldana) and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista). But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand- with the galaxy's fate in the balance."

Guardians of the Galaxy invades cinemas worldwide on August 1st, 2014.
