Marvel VS Capcom 3: Fate Of Two Worlds Review (9.5/10)

Marvel VS Capcom 3: Fate Of Two Worlds is the ultimate love letter to fans, encompassing ten years of advancement both in gaming and comic books and featuring the most robust version of Capcom's Street Fighter engine yet. A decade on from cult classic MVC2, the visuals have moved from stylistic animated sprites not far removed from comic characters to a superb representation of what each fighter would look like if they appeared in an intricately animated film. Much of the text is styled on the design of comic book lettering, so clearly the writers of the Marvel publications have had a lot of input into the creative process- all for the better! Moving onto the game-play itself, even though you would think that there's only so much that can be done in a fighting game developer Capcom has still managed to throw in a heap of innovation and ingenuity, replacing the one-on-one battles with suitably more epic three-on-three matches that add length and a crazy graphical edge previously unheard of in a video game (those with photosensitive epilepsy are warned before the menus appear for a reason). If, however, you're expecting a title with the potential to win Best Story of 2011 via a dense and compelling plot, you will have to look elsewhere- the subtitle 'Fate Of Two Worlds' means absolutely nothing, only bearing relevance in the final boss battle against a Fantastic Four menace who I'll let you discover the identity of yourselves. That aside, even the soundtrack manages to surprise at every turn: there's an extras section where you can listen to each character's individual music (you heard right!), and everyone gets the right treatment from the developers, right down to Ameratsu the wolf from sublime Wii exclusive Okami! The replay value here is predictably massive, what with all the missions and character endings available to unlock, so provided the lack of modes doesn't get you down Marvel VS Capcom 3 could easily be known as the best party game released this year. Overall, while the fighting engine can never feel totally fresh anymore, and there's even less in the way of plot than in Super Street Fighter IV (9/20), Marvel VS Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds is the perfect reward for the long wait fans have endured in between entries, and deserves a look from everyone who has ever loved comic books, fighting video games or both!
