The rumoured Kinect on-rails shooter has been cast aside, Epic confirms.
Microsoft's Kinect peripheral really hasn't been having a good time of it lately- aside from the strong Kinect Sports and Dance Central launch titles and their respective sequels, there haven't been any core killer apps for the device, and Kinect Star Wars (4/10, check out my review at TechTroid if you haven't already) didn't do anything to change that. On top of that, as well as projects like Ryse and Steel Batallion being kept mostly under wraps, Epic Games have now confirmed that their reportedly planned on-rails shooter for Kinect, Gears Of War: Exile has been cancelled. "Let's just bury the hatchet now," series producer Cliff Blesinski replied when GameSpot asked about the project, "Gears Of War: Exile was an unannounced game that I cannot give any more details about, that has since been cancelled." That Blesinksi can't elaborate further may suggest that some of the ideas in the canned 'Greatest Hits of Gears' compilation of sorts will be used in a later instalment of the Gears games franchise, but we'll never really be sure, and again it's a shame to see Kinect lose another potential chance for glory here. Epic Games are currently working on Fortnite, a downloadable cartoon survival title due for release this Autumn.
