Advent Calendar 2011: Day Eleven

HAPPY FEET TWO REVIEW (3.5/5)
I have to admit I'm pleasantly surprised. No, that statement isn't a precursor to me saying that Happy Feet Two is the best film of 2011, because it isn't, but considering how shockingly bad the original (2/5) was, I came out of the sequel surprisingly content with my viewing. For one, the 3D technology actually worked wonders, especially on the two Krill characters- Bill and Will, played hilariously by Brad Pitt and Matt Damon and undoubtedly the stars of the show- who seemed to burst out of the screen on a number of occasions. Moreso, though, the plot actually delves out a little further than the basic 'big fish, small pond' premise that held its predecessor back so much, looking at climate change, loyalty and carnivore nature, and throwing in a few great rock anthems (We Are The Champions, Under Pressure and Rhythm Nation being my particular highlights) to back it all up for its target audience. It's the animation that remains the landmark feature of the film, as ever, however while that was its only redeeming feature in the case of the first film, this time the improved storyline, the great voice actors and the frequently superb soundtrack that have convinced me, as How To Train Your Dragon and Toy Story 3 did last year, that we can still get great animations. While Happy Feet Two is hardly on a par with those animated greats, it goes some way to reaching that standard, and redeems my faith in 'U' rated films to an extent. Want a neat festive film to catch this Christmas? You could do a lot worse!
