ASSASSIN'S CREED: REVELATIONS (9/10)
To all intents and purposes, this was the year that Assassin's Creed truly reached its full potential- the setpieces preceding Ezio's discovery of the Masayaf keys were thrilling, the homages to the original game nostalgia-inducing and the breathtaking depiction of Constantinople stunning. Why, then, didn't Revelations score as highly as AC2 or Brotherhood (10/10s)? What those games shared and this year's instalment was devoid of was pure innovation: any additions to the tired franchise formula, bombs and ziplines included, were either useless in the long run or stolen from other action-adventure platformers that knew how to put the gadgetry to work in their own entries. Yes, it was great to get a satisfying conclusion to the stories of Ezio and Altair, but golly, was the final cliffhanger anti-climatic, making this feel like a mere expansion pack to Brotherhood merely meant to bridge the gap between it and the inevitable release of AC3 in 2012. Thankfully, what the game lacked in originality it made up for with total blockbuster action, far more engaging and varied than ever before, and in so many moments Assassin's Creed: Revelations justifies its place high up the list, even if we've seen those moments before in some form.
