WINNER: THE DARK KNIGHT
Christopher Nolan certainly founded a hit with Batman Begins in 2005- it wasn't until The Dark Knight, though, that Nolan stumbled simply from ruling the superhero film genre to becoming a filmic great of his own right. Partly such success was based on his casting of Heath Ledger as the Joker, a character who has never been so dark or scary before or since the brilliant late actor passed away, but there was so much more to Knight than that: the incredible IMAX sequences; the heartbreaking tale of Aaron Eckhart's Harvey Dent's transformation from noble politician to deranged psychopath; and the haunting denounement of Batman's turn to villainy served to build an Oscar-worthy flick packed with tears, thrills and dark humour galore. If you ever see an action-adventure film, you still need to make it this one three years on. Bring on The Dark Knight Rises...
Simon Pegg has always been on top form in his comedies, yet bar Hot Fuzz I'd wager he has never reached a higher peak than Run Fatboy Run! The lovable cast of rising stars worked with Pegg to provide an utterly uplifting tale of love and loyalty, and although that's hardly an original premise, Run turned it on its head with brilliant direction and a great modern soundtrack. You'd be hard pressed to find a better sports film than this one, and given that's not even the genre I would place Run Fatboy Run in, that's quite an accolade indeed.
