GAME OF THE YEAR 2008WINNER: GRAND THEFT AUTO IV
There were many brilliant titles released in the video games industry in 2008, but none could possibly come close to topping Grand Theft Auto IV, an incredible open-world experience that came damn close to perfection. Niko Bellic's breathtaking adventure in Liberty City captivated an entire generation, the visuals were gritty yet stunningly realistic, and the gameplay was so open-ended that the possibilities for replays were virtually endless.
RUNNER UP: MARIO KART WIITo be fair, though, as usual Nintendo were among many people's Game of the Year shortlists with their huge racing game, Mario Kart Wii, perhaps the best party title available even now. The Kart formula had finally been refined to its absolute maximum here, brilliantly realised motion controls and beautiful graphics combining with the classic driving and power ups to form the best entry in the series.
