Sonic Colours Review (9/10)
Sonic's 2010 was a mixed bag, with great new entries in the series like Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing and Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 helping fans remuster their faith in the iconic character but forgettable additions such as Sonic: Free Riders (I still have nightmares thinking about it) proving that SEGA still had work to do. Thankfully, Sonic Colours falls into the former category, proving that the Wii can still provide us with thrilling 3D experiences and that the developer can create a Sonic game without using fancy gimmicks or werewolves. You enter a theme park built by Eggman to harness the power of alien Wisps, and using their powers (which add to the gameplay rather than hinder it) you must foil his evil plot and destroy his spaceship which holds half a dozen planets hostage. The graphics on display here are spectacular, showcasing loads of varied environments which constantly twist and change throughout and thus give a heavy air of innovation and sheer wonder not found recently in the likes of Unleashed and The Black Knight. Sure, the game borrows a few of its Wisp powers from the Super Mario Galaxy power-ups but when the experience is this unpredictable and fun that's a minor complaint. Even the voice cast are bearable to listen to, so that's a good sign! Ultimately, the only shortcoming of Colours is its difficulty curve, which ramps up the level of frustration jarringly just halfway through the storyline, and although this is a common fault of the franchise that it might force players to put the game down when the overall quality is so superb is too notable to be forgiven. Hopefully Sonic Generations will right this when it hits the 360 and PS3 this Winter, but until then this is the best Sonic game yet, and a fine Wii title to boot!
