"The Doctor will be back..."...but not for a while yet. After years of guessing, we finally learned the true identity of River Song as the first half of this season closed last week: she's Amy and Rory's daughter, Melody Pond! Although the cliffhanger perhaps came off as less 'game-changing' than we had expected, it may turn out to have been just that if you think what reprecussions the events of Episodes 1, 2 & particularly 7 might have on the rest of the season. Here's what we can expect when the Doctor is back this Autumn:
EPISODE 8- LET'S KILL HITLER!: Remember when we saw the Doctor asking soldiers about "the Commandant's office" as he signalled to Amy and Rory from history to bring them to his death? Maybe this is when that event takes place- World War Two, the location for the 'season opener' of the second half. Bear in mind that Churchill and/or his flying Spitfires could get involved, but that's speculation from me. What you can guarantee is that there will be time paradoxes aplenty involving the episode's title and twists aplenty involving the overall series arc.
EPISODE 9- WHAT LITTLE BOYS ARE MADE OF: Written by Mark Gatiss (who scripted Victory of the Daleks), this one is meant to be a mini-horror involving a haunted house and creepy ventriloquist's dolls coming to life.
EPISODE 10- THE GREEN ANCHOR: Don't expect another pirate episode as this is a rumoured title, but so far we know very little about Tom McRae's story so perhaps it takes place on a spaceship? That might explain the ship reference...
EPISODE 11- THE GOD COMPLEX: David Walliams guest stars as strange alien Gibbis in a hotel-set episode where the environment is rapidly changing around the Doctor...
EPISODE 12: Written by Gareth Roberts, this stars James Corden and Daisy Lowe as Craig Owens and Sophie once more and is a sequel to The Lodger, also with ties to the impending finale of the season.
EPISODE 13: Obviously Steven Moffat's work, your guess on this one is as good as ours, but expect appearances from the Eye-Patch Lady, Dorium (that one's confirmed), Mark Gatiss (a cameo) and the Silence (they're the series baddie, so it seems right they start and end this season). We're promised more on what River's secret regarding the Doctor is, how the Doctor dies (and survives...?) and more ties into Series Seven that culminate in another cliffhanger of sorts (like when the Doctor almost recapped the upcoming challenges in The Big Bang)!
THE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL: After all that, Doctor Who will leave our screens for just over a month, then return with a new one-hour special whose title apparently made Matt Smith "nearly fall off his chair"! Perhaps Amy and Rory will feature, or perhaps a new companion will- either way, this and at least 13 more episodes will still star Matt, which can only be a good thing!
Doctor Who returns in September.
