BBC Television Centre To Be Sold
The BBC Television Centre in White City will be sold, it has been announced this week. Opened on the 29th of June 1960, the site has provided the foundation for many of the television broadcaster's programmes for over fifty years. Shows of note that were shot in the centre in the past include Faulty Towers, Doctor Who, Strictly Come Dancing and Blue Peter, the iconic garden set of which still remains intact in the building. The Beeb envision either "a conventional sale or offers to redevelop the site as a joint venture", but what this ultimately means is that many staff who currently work in the 'electric donut' will be relocated to other centres such as those in Salford and Central London. The owners of the establishment hope to hand it over to its new management by 2015. That said, it's unlikely anyone will remember the day it passes hands fondly, marking the end of a defining era of television broadcast that will never be forgotten.
