This year's biggest fail for an anticipated motion picture?
Despite its heavy marketing campaign and broad appeal, it appears that John Carter has failed big time to succeed at cinemas in its debut. I'll wholeheartedly admit that I was disappointed with the film, ranking it at 3/5 for an oft dull plot with several pacing issues, but there certainly seemed to be some lurking potential for a cool CGI franchise to spawn from the comic reboot, so to see the likeliehood of a sequel reduced so significantly by Disney's loss of $200 million on the project is a bit of a shame really. The critics' reviews probably didn't help, either- it is currently averaging at just 51% (2.5/5) on Metacritic, making the chances for more film-goers to pay for its tickets less and less likely. Still, at least Disney have Avengers Assemble, Brave, Finding Nemo 3D and Frankenweenie still to come before year's end, each easily likely to generate some serious sales revenue. A sad day for fans of John Carter of Mars, though, and a sure sign of the impact of critical reviews and audience feedback.
