Who News: Ice Warriors Return Announced

The Doctor'ssssss enemiessss from Peladon are back in action thissss year (if you don't get the joke, you will soon)!
Well, what a coincidence- literally on the very day that I do a retrospective feature on classic Ice Warrior story The Seeds Of Death, we have it confirmed to us that the Ice Warriors will return to Doctor Who in its anniversary season this Spring! Yes, those fabled foes from Peladon whose hisses and crystalline structure have menaced two incarnations of the Time Lord are back in Series Seven Part Two, featuring in the third episode, a claustrophobic submarine adventure written by Mark Gatiss.

Here's what executive producer Caroline Skinner had to say to SFX in their exclusive reveal: "We're bringing back the Ice Warriors...on a submarine! It's a wonderful kind of 'bunker' episode, and a classic monster which Mark has brought his own inimitable twist to. Mark is an enormous fan of the Ice Warrior stories and came up with the idea. The sense of a monster of that scale and that size trapped in a really small, contained environment was a really brilliant story to be able to tell. They were such a beautiful original design, and are genuinely really scary in terms of what they look like as they're coming towards you in that armour."

Just to recap, then, we've got eight blockbuster adventures to come in the anniversary season of Series Seven Part Two this Spring, and here's our guide to what we know about each of them...
EPISODE 7- Steven Moffat's mid-season premiere will introduce the modern version of Clara Oswald as the regular Doctor Who companion, and with her clever boy, they'll run off and remember in an intense urban thriller that starts in London and goes worldwide! Starring Celia Imrie.
EPISODE 8- The first adventure from Luther writer Neil Cross features Doctor Who's most beautiful CGI alien planet yet, but there are dark secrets lying beneath the surface in this intense sci-fi adventure...
EPISODE 9- The Ice Warriors return! Here's Mark Gatiss' first instalment of Series Seven, taking place on a submerged submarine and featuring Game Of Thrones' Liam Cunningham.
PHANTOMS OF THE HEX- Call The Midwife's Jessica Raine stars in a shocking horror story of ghouls and terrors in the past, forcing the Doctor and Clara into completely unknown territory.
JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE TARDIS- Stephen Thompson returns to writing Who after his bouts on Sherlock for an epic TARDIS-spanning adventure that features our most extensive look yet into the dark depths of the new time and space machine first glimpsed in The Snowmen!
EPISODE 12- Little is known about this Victorian factory detective mystery from Mark Gatiss just yet, bar that it features the return of Madame Vastra, Jenny and Strax to encounter Clara for the first time in modern form as a diabolical threat of female alien menaces ravages Victorian London.
THE LAST CYBERMAN- Neil Gaiman is back to see out the 2006 incarnations of the Cybermen and usher in a new era for one of the Doctor's oldest foes. Expect to see an all-new look for these metallic adversaries, plus guest roles from Life Too Short, Star Wars and An Idiot Abroad's Warwick Davis and Being Human and Trollied's Jason Watkins for a truly stellar penultimate journey.
EPISODE 14- The Series Seven and Anniversary Season finale should be a big one, as it's written by showrunner Steven Moffat. The Paternoster Gang will return, the mystery of Clara will finally be unravelled, and the threads building towards the 50th Anniversary Special will emerge, as the Fields Of Trenzalore and the Fall Of The Eleventh beckon the Doctor...Beyond this, we'll still have the hour-long Anniversary Special and the movie-length Biopic from Mark Gatiss to come as part of the anniversary celebrations from the BBC in November, plus a new Christmas Special in December, so things only get bigger and better!

Doctor Who returns to BBC1 on Saturday 30th March (Easter Saturday).
