Sonic Free Riders Review (K: 1/10)

Imagine if you were given an ace new skateboard, capable of travelling at colossal speeds and handling perfectly, then someone gave you a set of wheels for it that sent the board flying in uncontrollable directions at the slowest possible pace, rendering the vehicle useless. That's exactly the situation Kinect owners face with Sonic: Free Riders, except thankfully gamers have the utter privilege to be able to remove this turgid attempt at a motion racer that barely deserves to be called a video game. Believe me, I hate writing reviews that have to absolutely slate a title, yet here there is pretty much no control over your on-screen avatar or his movements. Even Kinect Joy Ride allowed some degree of accuracy on Microsoft's peripheral to an extent, whereas Free Riders feels like it was just rushed out for launch day instead of being given the same respect and dedication the likes of Unleashed and Colours received over the years. The plot isn't much cop either, featuring a rag-tag competition that threatens the sanctity of the Earth for no apparent reason. Even the soundtrack fares no better- Free Riders opens with a loud, hideous theme tune that will get in your head for all the wrong reasons, and no effort has gone into the tracks for each individual course. Kinect's launch line-up was relatively impressive, but Sonic's first Xbox 360 exclusive outing just gives the haters of the motion camera more evidence against it revolutionising the world of gaming!
