Merlin Series Four Back To 13

The fourth season of Merlin will be 13, not 10, episodes long, it has been revealed. Speaking to SFX, executive producer Johnny Capps remarked "[The Merlin team] were very lucky with Series Three- it was hugely successful and we built our audience throughout, so I think the BBC now sees it as one of their most important Autumn dramas, especially for a Saturday night." Originally, it had seemed that budget cuts to the broadcasting corporation would mean a shorter run for Merlin in 2011, yet this confirmation by Capps more than indicates faith in a programme which maintains the five or six million mark every week (impressive by any channel's standards). With King Uther left broken by the invasion of his kingdom at the close of Season Three, could Arthur pull the sword from the stone and become the rightful monarch this time around? The exec wouldn't be drawn in his interview, but he did tell SFX that "The Knights of the Round Table are around a lot this series. Arthur has to take more control, but people are surprised that he has given these people who aren't of noble status the title of knight", making for an "interesting tension" between the future King and his followers. Merlin will return either this Autumn or in Spring 2012; keep checking On-Screen for updates!
