The Amazing Spider-Man Villain Revealed
C.Thomas Howell, star of US drama The Outsiders, has revealed his role in 2012's reboot The Amazing Spider-Man, and subsequently who will be the villain in the flick. Speaking in a podcast yesterday, Howell told us he plays a "construction worker caught in the middle of a battle on the Manhattan bridge", even going so far as to say that "part of the story [of Amazing] is the nation thinks Spidey might be a bad guy. Spider-Man is kind of hurting. I help him when all the other people won't." Sounds like a darker incarnation of the Webbed Wonder than we were used to in Sam Raimi's 2002-2007 trilogy starring Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, but with Kick-Ass' Marc Webb directing we're hardly surprised, and hopefully Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone can help to do the Marvel hero justice once more. Howell also said that the battle is "between Spider-Man and the Lizard." That's exciting, seeing as Rhys Ifans has been confirmed to play Dr Curt Conners (who in the comics transforms into the Lizard), so we're probably looking at a big face-off between the pair to kick start Spidey's career. How Sam Raimi's recent comment that this would fit in with the Maguire trilogy can still be correct when Curt Conners never transformed in those films is beyond us unless Ifans' incarnation loses his memory at the end, but nevertheless On-Screen is looking forward to seeing how it all comes together next year!
