In possibly the most anticipated move of 2011, Sony Pictures Animation has released the first trailer for the upcoming Smurfs film. Titled The Smurfs (surprise!), it's a live-action/CGI flick that sees the titular blue dwarves get transported from the Middle Ages to present day by a portal as the evil Gargamel (played by Hank Azaria, the actor who seems to be in everything nowadays, check out Run Fatboy Run and Night at the Museum 2 for some of his best roles). How the animation studio intends to sell the wacky concept to a generation of kids who probably haven't even heard of these characters is beyond me, since currently it's looking to be a sub-par, farcical comedy with Emma Stone (see Epic Movie and Glee) adding the "Aww, aren't they cute" that will no doubt be missing from any audience under the age of 20. In other words, literally don't expect big things from this one...
