Iron Man 3 To Be A Standalone Tale
Since the announcement that a third Iron Man film would be entering pre-production in 2012 for release the next year, fans of the franchise have wondered how the new instalment for Robert Downey Jr's metal clad hero will fit into the chronology of the Marvel film universe given that it follows The Avengers (which Iron Man also features in). Speaking to Film Journal, president of Marvel movie production Kevin Feige has shed some light on the situation. "Audiences will see [in Iron Man 3] Tony Stark is going back into his own world," claims Feige, "there will be acknowledgements of the events of The Avengers and the character journey he took there, but he's not going to be having tea with Thor and calling Nick Fury every five minutes." It does have to be said that Iron Man 2 (4/5) was hampered by its duty to almost promote the upcoming Marvel team-up, so with any luck the freedom to follow a new storyline without ties to the wider universe should help writer Shane Black craft a more well-rounded script. However, I can't help but wonder how Black will get around the fact that when in trouble protagonist Stark would usually just be able to call on the help of his superhero friends, unless there are references to each Avenger having a prior engagement against their own enemies. The Avengers is due out in May 2012, while Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 are both set for release in the Summer of 2013.
