We finally get the news that everyone's wanted confirmed by officials!
At this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, the topic of a new Xbox console was a big taboo for Microsoft among press interviews and showcase talks. The industry icons were more keen to promote Halo 4, Gears Of War: Judgement, Forza: Horizon and SmartGlass as the remainder of their big Xbox 360 projects for 2012 and early 2013 than awkwardly balance two generations of hardware and software as Nintendo unsuccessfully did by shunning the Wii's release schedule at their own conference. As such, since then analysts and fans have been eagerly debating when Microsoft would reveal the existence of their next-generation console reported for release next year.
Well, now that time has come, and although it's hardly a fully-fledged announcement, the cat is most certainly out of the bag. Microsoft's general manager Dan Hall was recently speaking to The Verge about their new Outlook project. He had this to say: "We've had Hotmail and have operated Hotmail for about sixteen years, we obviously have Exchange, and Outlook, that people use at work. We just decided it was time to do something new and bring the best from each of those and put them together and release it in time for the new wave of products we have coming out for Windows 8, with the new version of Office with the Windows Phone and the new Xbox." So there you have it- there is a 'new Xbox' on the way, and it seems the release will definitely be sooner rather than later! Of course, journalists everywhere are already hot on Microsoft's case for a follow-up general announcement, thus don't be surprised if we hear of a big gaming marketing event soon in the next few months...The Xbox 720 will likely release in late 2013.
