The BBC have today announced the title of the Doctor Who Christmas Special for 2013, along with the release of the first plot synopsis for the upcoming feature-length episode. Starring Matt Smith, Jenna Coleman and Orla Brady, Smith's final turn as the Doctor will air next month.
For starters, we now know the official title of the final Who episode of the year- The Time of the Doctor. Steven Moffat seems to like the 'The [...] of the Doctor' theme judging by his recent contributions to the series, including The Name of the Doctor, The Night of the Doctor, The Day of the Doctor and now The Time of the Doctor. With any luck, episode titles should revert back to normal and inspire more originality come Series Eight!
Over on Facebook, the BBC marketing team have confirmed that Matt's last instalment will be set in a town called 'Christmas' on the planet Trenzalore. The first teaser trailer (below) confirmed that the Daleks, the Weeping Angels, the Cybermen and the Silence will all return before the regeneration sequence at the episode's climax, but the plot synopsis released today at least offers some concrete hints of what to expect. Here's the synopsis in full: "Orbiting a quiet backwater planet, the massed forces of the universe's deadliest species gather, drawn to a mysterious message that echoes out amongst the stars- and amongst them, the Doctor. Rescuing Clara from a family Christmas dinner, the Time Lord and his best friend must learn what this enigmatic signal means for his own fate and that of the universe..."
Doctor Who: The Time of the Doctor will broadcast on BBC One this Christmas Day.
