Walt Disney Pictures have today released the third (and presumably final) theatrical trailer (below) for their upcoming fantasy film Maleficent. A live-action re-imagining of the classic animated flick Sleeping Beauty, this semi-sequel focuses on the original effort's antagonist, who's played by none other than Angelina Jolie this time around.
The studio have demonstrated on several occasions in the past how remakes such as these can go south, however, with Oz: The Great and Powerful and The Lone Ranger lingering in the memory as the most notable examples of lacklustre productions of that ilk released in the last few years. To her credit, Jolie looks set to own the stage with her turn as one of Disney's most infamous villainesses, and Ellie Fanning seems perfectly suited to the role of the Sleeping Beauty herself, Princess Aurora. What remains to be seen is just where our sympathies as an audience are intended to lie come release day, a currently ambiguous narrative situation which the marketing team could benefit from clarifying before the Summer months creep up on us.
Maleficent casts its spell on cinemas worldwide this May 30th.
