Find out the biggest and best films we've had between July and September...
Hard as it is to believe, we're already heading into the final quarter of the year- that means we've got July-September to look back on in anticipation of what's ahead. Here, then, we're going to round-up the five films that (in my opinion) truly sum up how great the industry and its products can be in the Summer and early Autumn months. I'll be interested to know your thoughts on my choices- here's the list...
5. TOTAL RECALL (3/5)- Colin Farrell managed to give viewers a pleasant surprise with a remake of a science-fiction classic that didn't disappoint as much as some had expected. Sure, there was an overreliance on fancy CGI rather than an iffy storyline which didn't play on expectations enough, yet Total Recall is still most certainly a great Summer blockbuster romp with some moments of fantastic storytelling.
4. TED (3.5/5)- All the chips were set for Ted to be a disappointing movie follow-up of sorts to the Family Guy and Cleveland Show when Seth McFarlane announced it last year. Thankfully, to a large extent the flick was a lot better than its predecessors, putting less emphasis on crude jokes and crass setpieces and more on its leads- McFarlane, Wahlberg and Kunis. It was a shame that there was a rather dire father-son kidnapping sub-plot thrown in to create a final setpiece, but there were still a heck of a lot of laughs to be had along the way.
3. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (4.5/5)- Kudos to Marc Webb and his production team for what turned out to be a thoroughly thrilling reboot of the Spider-Man film franchise. Amazing had its faults- the Lizard being the primary drawback- but its leads easily bested Toby Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, its CGI effects were impressive, its storyline had hints at even more exciting elements to come and there was a quirky charm about it all that made it only the weakest superhero film of 2012 by a tiny margin.
2. LOOPER (4.5/5)- There was one question in film fans' minds when Looper arrived in cinemas to rave reviews from critics: could it be the Film Of The Year? As I said in my review last week, the so-so ending held it back from achieving the 5/5 score that would place it as a contender here, yet it was easily Bruce Willis' best movie in a long time, boasting a thought-provoking time-travel/horror storyline and reprising the ever-brilliant Joseph Gordon-Levitt onto the scene. Sequel ahoy!...?
1. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (5/5)- When looking back over the past three months of film, though, the choice for the Best Film I've seen in this quarter becomes obvious. The Dark Knight Rises stands as a masterpiece of cinematic storytelling, laden with fan-enthralling references to the past yet better still providing definitive closure on one of the greatest film trilogies of all time through a captivating new villain, stunning performances from the series returnees and a beautiful ending that encapsulates everything we've come to love about Nolan's vision of the Caped Crusader. Woe betide anyone who tries to reboot the Bat in their Justice League film, as The Dark Knight Rises stands as one of the best films of 2012 (and in a while) by a big margin.
