Marvel News: Mary Jane Axed From Spider-Man 2

The Webbed Wonder will face Rhino, Electro, Norman and Harry Osborn in the sequel, but NOT the Girl Next Door...
Marvel Studios and director Marc Webb have confirmed a narrative edit to take place in their production of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and future films in the franchise. Previously, Shaliene Woodley had filmed a number of scenes as love interest Mary-Jane Watson for the much-anticipated sequel, acting as a secondary flame for Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker alongside Emma Stone's returning Gwen Stacy.

Now, though, it turns out that Woodley's incarnation of the Girl Next Door will not form a part of the second instalment. Director Webb has noted that he wants to place a focus on Peter and Gwen's relationship in Amazing 2, and that there are already more than enough plot elements in terms of antagonists and story arcs to justify removing the love triangle from the flick. This does of course pose an interesting question- will the sequel focus on the Death of Gwen Stacy storyline, with Mary-Jane appearing in the third film to regenerate Peter after his losses?

No matter what the approach that Webb and his team take, it's at least reassuring to see that they're willing to change a film's storyline in post-production to better suit the narrative and tones. Rumour has it, though, that Woodley may not be available on her schedule to shoot The Amazing Spider-Man 3 before its 2016 release, which could imply that the role will be recast for the third entry. Either way, expect to see a lot of Mary-Jane from the third film onwards!

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 swings into cinemas worldwide on May 2nd, 2014.
