Who News: Twelfth Doctor Announcement Window Confirmed

Matt Smith has only months left before his Doctor regenerates- but just when will we find out the identity of his successor?
The BBC have today announced a rough window of when we will discover the actor playing the Twelfth Doctor in Doctor Who. Earlier this month, we had it confirmed that Matt Smith will depart the role of the Time Lord in the 2013 Christmas Special.

With this in mind, the matter of the next actor or actress to inhabit the role became a point of strong discussion. As ever, plenty of celebrity names have been tossed into the fray including Daniel Radcliffe, Idris Elba and Dominic Gleeson, but once again it seems very likely that the new star will turn out to be a relative unknown just as Matt Smith was, albeit probably a little bit older this time around. Whoever the new star may be, we now know that confirmation of him or her inhabiting the role will come either in July or August ahead of the 2013 Christmas Special commencing shooting in late August/early September.

Whether the revelation will come in a BBC1 exclusive programme remains to be seen, especially as with Doctor Who Confidential axed there is no natural 'show' for which to give a special edition to announce the new star. This need not deter the BBC from putting on a programme, yet still does have this writer wondering whether in this day and age of technological spillages, we may just get a big extended press release from the BBC online on the day of the announcement.

Doctor Who returns with its blockbuster 50th Anniversary Special on November 23rd.
