Who News: Christmas Special Director Announced

The Eleventh Doctor returns this Christmas for his final journey- but who will direct Matt Smith's swansong?
If there's anything that we know for certain about this year's Doctor Who Christmas Special, it's that it will be a true game-changer in every sense of the word. Earlier this month, the BBC confirmed that the special one-hour episode will see the regeneration of Matt Smith's incarnation of the Doctor into a brand new version played by the twelfth actor in the role.

Today, we've had it confirmed that Jamie Payne will direct the 2013 Christmas Special. Payne has some great recent experience on the show, having helmed Neil Cross' visually and narratively stunning haunted house horror adventure Hide in Series Seven. On top of that shoot, the director has worked on projects such as The White Queen, Call The Midwife, Life On Mars, Ashes To Ashes and plenty more, making him a prime BBC director and thus a fitting choice to helm Matt's final adventure in the TARDIS.

Doctor Who returns for its blockbuster 50th Anniversary Special on November 23rd, with the Eleventh Doctor's final adventure set to air on Christmas Day and Season Eight confirmed for broadcast in 2014.
