Warner Brothers and New Line Studios have released the first theatrical trailer of their upcoming fantasy film sequel The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The new movie comprises the second instalment in Peter Jackson's trilogy-spanning adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic novel, and thus his prequels to his own award winning The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Desolation takes place shortly after the events of last December's An Unexpected Journey, with Bilbo Baggins and his motley crew of dwarves forced to traverse spider-infested forests, elven kingdoms and corrupted lands in order to reach the Lonely Mountain and reclaim the treasure of Erebor. We'll finally get to see Benedict Cumberbatch in action as the dragon Smaug himself, as well as Stephen Fry's Master of Laketown, Billy Connolly's Dain Ironfoot and Orlando Bloom's Rings returning Elf Legolas all set to storm the big screen too.
We'll see a lot more from this second instalment in the months ahead, but for now check out the fantastic first trailer for the film below. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug journeys into cinemas worldwide on December 13th.
