Director Guillermo Del Toro has this week revealed the first details on the still-in-stasis sequel to Universal Pictures' relatively commercially successful 2008 fantasy film Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Itself a follow-up to one of this writer's favourite films of all-time, Hellboy, the franchise's second instalment saw Ron Pearlman reprise his role as the titular bad-ass superhero as forces from the Underworld conspired (again) to wipe humanity off of the face of the Earth.
You can't help but admire Del Toro's enduring faith in his long-since-disbannded cast and production team, not to mention his unyielding optimism regarding the financial prospects of a third Hellboy motion picture, but aside from a few intriguing tidbits regarding a potential narrative for the aforementioned dormant piece of cinema, little in the way of genuine hope of a green-light seems to reside in the helmer's latest comments. Here's what he had to say to Collider on the subject: "Well, you know, we don't have that movie on the horizon, but the idea for it was to have Hellboy finally come to terms with the fact that his destiny [...] is to become the beast of the Apocalypse, and having him and Liz face [...] that part of his nature, and he has to do it, in order to [...] ironically vanquish the foe that he has to face in the 3rd film. [...] It's a very interesting ending to the series, but I don't think it will happen." Regardless, keep it On-Screen to find out all of the latest developments on Guillermo's upcoming big-screen and small-screen projects, as well as to hear any murmurings regarding a third Hellboy outing...
Hellboy II: The Golden Army is available now for purchase in all good UK DVD and Blu-Ray retailers.
