Walt Disney Pictures have today announced the global release date of the upcoming fifth instalment in their Pirates of the Caribbean franchise of historical fantasy films. Originally scheduled to sail into cinemas next year, the follow-up to On Stranger Tides is now set to make its big-screen début half a dozen years after its predecessor's original cinematic release, pitting itself against blockbusters such as The Wolverine 3, The LEGO Movie 2 and Despicable Me 3 this time around.
Though there's no official confirmation of central cast members for the next chapter in the studio's much-discussed announcement on Twitter, it doesn't take the presence of Tia Dalma in the room for us to predict that Johnny Depp will reprise his role as the beloved (though less so these days!) wise-cracking swashbuckler Captain Jack Sparrow alongside Kevin McNally (Gibbs) and quite possibly Geoffrey Rush (Barbossa). Quite whether the new Pirates will match the strength of the original trilogy of (mostly) light-hearted and fast-paced motion pictures and simultaneously dissolve the wretch-inducing taste On Stranger Tides left in our mouths back in 2011 is another matter entirely, though - stay tuned as we chart a course with director Jerry Bruckheimer into (ideally) uncharted waters, for better or for worse...
The fifth instalment in the Pirates of the Caribbean series will tumble into cinemas worldwide via a spinning water-wheel on July 7th, 2017.
