Warner Bros. Pictures have today released the first official plot synopsis for their upcoming fantasy blockbuster The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Directed by The Lord of the Rings helmer Peter Jackson, the final instalment in the critically lauded trilogy of cinematic adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic children's novel The Hobbit will depict the resolution of Smaug's attack on Laketown and Gandalf's capture at the hands of Sauron as well as the fabled titular Battle of the Five Armies.
We shan't keep you from reading the précis in full for long, but first, it may additionally interest Hobbit fans to learn that the British Board of Film Classification have just rated the impending teaser trailer (rumoured to be coming our way on July 20th) for the third motion picture outing, classifying it as a 12A video clip and revealing its running time to be 1 minute and 48 seconds. With that precious information out in the open, then, let's press on and unveil the oh-so-tantalising synopsis for Battle, a précis which is sure to make this Christmas seem further away than ever before...
"The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town.
Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honour to hoard it as Bilbo's frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf, the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain.
As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide - unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-Earth hangs in the balance."
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies wages war in UK cinemas nationwide this December 12th and international theatres worldwide on December 17th.
