Benedict Cumberbatch follows David Tennant into the role of one of Shakespeare's most iconic constructs!
The Royal Shakespeare Company have this week announced the new lead star for their upcoming production of Hamlet. This role of Shakespeare's titular tragic protagonist has recently been played by British thespians including Doctor Who's David Tennant, Side Effects' Jude Law and Life on Mars' John Simm.
Next up on the podium will be Benedict Cumberbatch, who will star in the RSC's late 2014 production of the play. Cumberbatch is best known for his portrayal of Arthur Conan Doyle's Great Detective in Sherlock, the BBC One's detective drama series set to return next month. His current projects include The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and August: Osage County, the former launching in cinemas worldwide this Friday. He once described Hamlet as a character who he had "been interested in for a long time", and this writer couldn't contest that the British star's fanbase will be over the moon to learn of his appointment.
Hamlet will be performed by the RSC at London theatres in Autumn 2014.
