November 2013: Best Release
Analysts keeping check on On-Screen's monthly Best Release awards for 2013 may have taken note of the fact that until now, Doctor Who had not featured amongst the year's victors. Series Seven's final episodes were impressive, but none of them attained the same dramatic gravitas which shows such as Game of Thrones and Being Human managed in 2013's early months.
Had the programme's 50th Anniversary Special, The Day of the Doctor, disappointed its fans, then an argument could be made for another temporary hiatus to come Who's way. That wasn't the case in any sense, however- Day was one of this reviewer's favourite episodes of the science-fiction drama in quite some time, a feature-length adventure which will remain vividly in the memory for months on end. From the superb central cast to Nick Hurran's stellar direction, from the finely honed homages to the past to the climax's daring mission statement for the show's future, there's scarcely a single element of the one-off special which doesn't fulfil its lofty potential.
Could Doctor Who's latest elevate the show to our 'Best TV Show of 2013' or 'Best TV Episode of 2013' awards? That remains to be seen thanks to some fierce competition throughout the year, but either way, Steven Moffat has left the series in a hugely enviable position ahead of its momentous Christmas Special and 2014's Series Eight. Peter Capaldi will debut on the show in seventeen days' time, yet for now, The Day of the Doctor is the best opportunity yet for fans to revel in Matt Smith's profoundly excelled inhabiting of the titular role of the Time Lord.
