Hoping for Series Three scripts of BBC One's cult detective drama? Consider them ripped up.
The BBC have today announced that their detective drama Ripper Street will not return for a third season of episodes in 2014. This revelation comes after BBC One's Director General Charlotte Moore announced a host of new commissions yesterday for next year, including Big School, Citizen Khan and Inside KFC.
As with any cancellation these days, the reasoning behind Ripper Street's axing is extremely logical coming from the BBC. A spokesman for the studio gave the following comments on the decision: "We are very proud of Ripper Street, which has enjoyed two highly ambitious series on BBC One. However, the second series didn't bring the audience we hoped and in order to make room for creative renewal and new ideas, it won't be returning." Given that the most recent episode of the series earned 3.26 million viewers in comparison to past ratings of 5-8 million overnight, it seems the channel aim to move swiftly on from this rapidly declining project.
