Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures have this week released the theatrical trailer (below) for their festive musical-comedy-drama motion picture Annie. A remake of the classic 1982 movie of the same name, the third big-screen rendition of the beloved West End musical stars Beasts of the Southern Wild's Quvenzhane Wallis, Django Unchained's Jamie Foxx, Bridesmaids' Rose Byrne and Knight and Day's Cameron Diaz.
If first (or in this instance, second) impressions are indicative of a product's final quality, then this isn't looking like a half bad project either. Wallis' portrayal of everyone's favourite spunky chimney-sweeper appears (from a surface level, at least) to be worlds apart from her predecessors, and with any luck, it'll be this distinction which in turn allows the production as a whole to be received in a fresh and welcoming light by even the most hardcore devotees who currently remain loyal to the original text(s). To anticipate Oscar-worthy performances from Foxx, Byrne or their co-stars would be churlish to say the very least, but our prediction is that Wallis may yet surprise the world when it comes to reinvigorating a long-dormant yet still emotionally uplifting narrative.
Annie will be adopted in US cinemas this December 19th and will find a home in UK cinemas nationwide on February 6th, 2015.
