Paramount Pictures have this week released the theatrical trailer for their action-fantasy blockbuster Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Produced by Transformers' Michael Bay and directed by Wrath of the Titans' Jonathan Liebesman, this long-in-development reboot of the long-running film series of the same name stars Megan Fox, Will Arnett and Whoopi Goldberg as well as the voices of Johnny Knoxville, Alan Ritchson, Noel Fisher, Jeremy Howard and Tony Shalhoub.
We only wish that we had better news to report when it comes to providing initial impressions of Turtles based on its latest extended video teaser. This writer has long held an apathy towards the movie franchise overall due to the increasingly lacklustre quality of its subsequent instalments (the attempted all-CGI 2007 reboot, TMNT, certainly didn't help matters on this front) and much as we must aim to enter an auditorium with as great a degree of objectivity towards the finished product as humanly possible, it's in our nature to raise or lower expectations based on a motion picture's marketing campaign, and at this rate, the Turtles' latest big-screen outing couldn't look more clichéd or less emotionally compelling if it tried. Perhaps that explains why Paramount have chosen to shunt it out of the UK's Summer of Film blockbuster season entirely...
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles skids into US cinemas nationwide on August 8th, with UK theatres following suit on October 17th.
