Disney Interactive Studios and Avalanche Software have this week announced the development of a Spider-Man-themed playset to be implemented as retail DLC for their upcoming video game Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Superheroes. The sequel to last August's hit Skylanders rival Disney Infinity will feature a considerable range of characters from across both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Marvel Inc's various ongoing comic-strips including the Earth's Mightiest Heroes (better known to fans as the Avengers), the Guardians of the Galaxy and more still to be announced.
Against all of the odds, the original Infinity proved to be a bonafida success upon its release in the Summer of 2013, earning credits aplenty from reviewers for its unique approach to blending physical action figures with digital video game experiences despite the abundance of identikit franchises doing much the same thing right now. The narrative of the newly-announced Spider-Man expansion playset (which was revealed at the Electronic Entertainment Expo and will presumably land alongside the Avengers playset that offers access to the Marvel Superheroes content) will focus on the titular web-slinger's desperate campaign to stop his oldest foes - the Green Goblin, Mysterio and even Venom included - from taking control of New York City. As you'll see in the teaser trailer below, it looks as if an open-world NYC environment will feature, though there's been no confirmation as of yet whether it'll take place in a simultaneous time-frame to that of the Avengers set. Expect to hear more on the set and the enhanced gameplay features of Disney Infinity 2.0 in days to come.
The Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Superheroes Starter Pack (containing the Avengers playset and action figure versions of Iron Man, Thor and Natasha Romanov) will retail for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 (and on these two Sony consoles, there'll also be an exclusive Collector's Edition version featuring the Hulk action figure), Xbox One, Xbox 360, Nintendo WiiU, PC and iOS this September 23rd, with a PlayStation Vita edition set to follow in 2015. It'll be accompanied by the Spider-Man playset, a separate package containing Spidey and Nova action figures which will launch this Autumn.
