BBC Worldwide have today announced the UK and US première date of the eighth season of their revived science-fiction drama Doctor Who. Starring Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman as the Twelfth Doctor and Clara Oswald respectively, the upcoming run will comprise of twelve instalments, featuring guest stars such as Ben Miller, Samuel Anderson and Keeley Hawes.
As if it wasn't enough to witness Andy Murray's triumph over Roberto Bautatista Agut at Wimbledon this evening, viewers on BBC One were treated to a dramatic teaser trailer for Season Eight (check it out below) as well as official confirmation on when the series will return here in the UK (at which point BBC America interjected with the simultaneous American airdate - again, look below for both of them). The official Doctor Who website were evidently not going to let their televised competitors best them, though, going so far as to subsequently announce that the title of the feature-length opening episode of the run is "Deep Breath". A rumoured leaked segment of the script of the Twelfth Doctor's début did supposedly reveal that the TARDIS would crash land in the Thames in Victorian London after it went haywire in the final moments of "The Time of the Doctor", but we'll just have to wait and see whether the aforementioned episode title refers to a literal aquatic setpiece or a more thematic strand of the first chapter in the new season's narrative.
Doctor Who will return with a new series of epic time-travelling adventures this August 23rd on BBC One (time TBC) and BBC America (at 8/7c).
