Ubisoft have today announced the development of Tetris Ultimate for release on next-generation video games consoles later this year. Developed exclusively for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC (heaven knows why), this umpteenth instalment in the long-running puzzle series seems to exist solely to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the original beloved cult title.
For those who still hold enough interest in Tetris to have made it past the first paragraph of this article (if you'd like to see a little more enthusiasm demonstrated here for the project, be our guest and take over!), here's a brief round-up of Ultimate's main features:
- The various gameplay modes which will feature in the digital-only package are as follows: Marathon; Endless; Sprint; Power-Up Battle; Ultra and Battle. Each of these allow up to four players to test their block-busting mettle.
- Social media feeds will be integrated into the Ultimate menu screen and leaderboards so as to provide players with an accurate representation of how their friends and long-term adversaries are performing at the same time.
- Add online leaderboards, optional official Championship Rules and the traditional Tetris ranking tech and you've got...well, a video game experience which resembles its predecessors so closely that it might as well be a cut-and-paste effort. Game of the Year 2014? We think not.
Tetris Ultimate will build its foundations on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC this Autumn.
